Steamed Gem Squash

Serves 4 as a side dish
Ingredients 4 Gem Squash
Butter
Salt and pepper
Method Cut the gem squash in half through the middle part (not the stalk side). Using a teaspoon scoop out the seeds then place the halves in a steamer pot with about 2-3cm of water in the bottom of the steamer. Steam for five minutes then check to see if the flesh is soft. Sometimes they can be a little stringy and this is normal. If it is not too thick then the skin usually gets soft as well when they are cooked.
Remove from the steamer and put a blob of butter into the hot gem and then sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the top.
Notes You can also microwave them in a microwavable container with the same amount of water. Cook on high for 5 minutes and then check. Adjust the cooking time until the flesh is soft.
